SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 belong to the SHA-2 family. SHA-1 is included for compatibility and learning, not for security-sensitive applications.

What is a cryptographic hash?

A cryptographic hash function transforms input data into a fixed-length digest. For the same input bytes and algorithm, it produces the same digest. A small change in the input typically produces a very different hash.

Common uses

  • Checking file integrity against a trusted hash.
  • Generating content fingerprints.
  • Learning and testing cryptographic hash functions.
  • Comparing data digests in development workflows.

Important security notes

  • Hashing is not encryption. A hash cannot simply be decoded to recover the original input.
  • Do not store passwords using plain SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512. Use a dedicated password-hashing algorithm such as Argon2id or bcrypt, with appropriate configuration.
  • This tool generates a digest; it does not authenticate a file or prove that a source is trustworthy by itself.

Hashes are calculated locally using the Web Crypto API. The page does not send your input to a hashing service.
